Heritage and lime

Old buildings need old materials.

A solid stone wall has no cavity. It has always handled water by letting it evaporate away again. Seal that surface with cement or gypsum and the moisture stays inside, finds the timber, and quietly does far more damage than the damp patch you started with.

We work in lime because a great many properties around Monmouthshire were built to breathe. Lime plaster and render, repairs to cornice and ceiling roses, and conservation work on listed buildings, at the pace that sort of work actually needs.

Common questions

The things people ring and ask.

How much does plastering cost?
It depends on the size of the room, the state of the existing walls and whether we are skimming over something sound or starting again. We look at the job in person and give you a fixed price in writing before anything starts. Quotes are free and there is no obligation.
How long before I can paint new plaster?
Fresh plaster needs to dry right through before it takes paint, and that usually means a few weeks rather than a few days. Thick coats, cold weather and poor ventilation all slow it down. We will tell you what to expect for your specific job, and the first coat should always be a watered-down mist coat.
Do you cover my area?
We work throughout Monmouthshire and over the border, including Monmouth, Abergavenny, Chepstow, Usk, Raglan, Caldicot and the surrounding villages. If you are not sure whether you are in range, give us a ring and ask.
Will you take on a small job?
Yes. A single patched wall or a repaired ceiling is worth doing properly, and plenty of our work comes from people who called about something small first.

Tell us what needs doing.

Ring for a straight answer, or send the details over and we will come and look. Quotes are free, and there is no obligation either way.
